– If there was anything I could tell my younger self (besides to maybe consider getting an MRI on your head sometime before the age of 30), it would be this: don’t fall for artistic types. I would finally learned my lesson when I was 20 or so. No more musicians, no more painters. Even…

Today is the fiftieth anniversary of JFK’s assassination. Half a century later, it seems that the event still horrifies and captivates us. No aspect of it has gone unscrutinized. I’ve been devouring the Kennedy coverage – on everything from the suit Jackie wore on that day to the story of the AP writer who served as a pallbearer…

I went to L.A. and brought him a toy train on a string. I figured it would go over well, and it did. I wasn’t really surprised. He is my brother’s son, after all. He dragged the train around with him, and then he showed it to Rand.  –

– The thing that I love about humanity, besides Thai food and the tendency to dress our young up as animals, is our commitment to the arts. That as a species, as soon as our basic needs are met (and even if they aren’t) we all hellbent on writing and composing and painting and sculpting…

Rand is currently out of town (he left on Sunday morning, and he’ll be back tonight). His absence makes me nervous, because when he is not around, it means that I am alone. Now, that wouldn’t be a problem except for this: I should not be left alone, ever. Being alone means that I am…

After a glorious October and a wonderful start to November, it seems that the rain has finally caught up with us here in the northwest. As I stare at the droplets streaked across my office window, I realize that I have very little motivation to change out of my pjs on this grey morning. While…

10 Photos From Walking Around Philadelphia

We had a rental car in Philadelphia, but still I walked. I walked through downtown, down to the Italian market and back up again. When I got tired, I took the subway or hopped on a bus. But mostly, I saw the city on foot. I walked in muggy heat and pouring rain, both of…

  • Ugh, hard same, gems. Hard same.

Watching this sweet show made lockdown a little easier. #stevenuniverse #stevenuniversefuture
  • It is the apex of privilege that I can walk around my neighborhood, face covered, and know that no one will think twice about it. Trying to be more aware of that privilege, and how I can use it for good. But even talking about it feels self-congratulatory. #irunwithmaud
  • When Alison Roman says to put her slow roasted salmon on a bagel, you do it. This was just lovely.
  • This is the team up I've been waiting for. ❤️❤️❤️
  • Had a video podcast call today. Host joked that the dress code was formal. Challenge accepted. (I've never had the chance to wear this dress out.)
  • Make Kouign Amann, they said. It'll be easy, they said. You definitely won't set off two smoke alarms, they said. #quarantinebaking #kouignamann #instadesserts
  • Would I go so far as to call myself a baking genius? Yes. Yes, I would. 😅

My family is from the south, so we would call this pizza bianca ("white pizza) - and nobody really made it at home. But I became obsessed with it when we went to Genoa, and Rand and I seek out whenever we're in Liguria. We may have canceled our Italy trip, but I'll be damned if I'm not eating all the carbs. #saminnosrat #focaccia #saltacidfatheat
  • Before, and after. We're both sort of surprised by how well this home haircut turned out. Apparently I know how to do a gorgeous fade? I will not be exploring this talent further. #superstressful #tookforever #quarantinehaircut
  • No, I'm not making the damn bed.
  • Took a walk today, because, well, what else is there to do? Apparently a lot of folks had the same idea, because keeping my six feet of distance from everyone was tricky (I walked down the center of a lot of side streets). And while the sidewalks were full, the stores were empty and locked up - and it's so hard to see that and not know what the long term impact of this will be. A good reminder to support places if you can, keep your distance, wash your hands, buy gift certificates, tip your delivery driver, don't take more than what you need, and remember: we're all in this together.

All Over The Place

Buy my book and I promise I'll never ask you for anything again.
