The Week: July 12, 2013
It’s been a crazy week.
Rand’s company held a huge conference in downtown Seattle, which coincided perfectly with his birthday (which was almost, but not entirely, lost in the chaos). The last few days for Rand have involved a lot of mad running around, tons of costume changes, and not nearly enough cake.
I intend to remedy that last point this weekend. While I flip through some recipes, you enjoy these links:

I’m somewhat ashamed to admit I clicked through this entire list of 50 movie characters who were based on real people. The good news? Only some of them are terrifying.

I’m fascinated with Jim’ll Paint It. Apparently users send in their ideas – which are often silly, crazy, or just plain weird. And then Jim will bring those ideas to life … using just MS Paint. It’s … wow. (via the lovely Victoria, of Bridges and Balloons)

Jay-Z rapped for 6 hours at the MoMA. He’s no Abramović, but it’s still art.

This profile on Jeff Bauman, one of the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings, is heartbreaking to read. But you still should.

As someone who got a little cringey at the idea of Johnny Depp playing Tonto, I found this Onion article to be delightfully apt: “Ecstatic American Indians Praise The Lone Ranger.”
—————
I’m really digging George Tate’s photos of midcentury California.
—————
I love Kristen Schaal.

Rand and I travel a lot, we means we often come home, jet lagged and starving, to an empty fridge. Which is why my pal Naomi’s list of easy recipes that you can make with stuff you (probably) already have is a lifesaver.
—————
Google Maps takes you down Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley.
—————
A mesmerizing mash-up of portraits of family members.

This is fascinating: the historical origins of some commonly-used misogynistic words. Surprised that “hysterical” didn’t make the list. (Via my friend Jessica.)

That’s it for me this week, folks. I’m off to bake my sweetie a cake.
