The Week: February 8, 2013

I’m sorry that the blog has been so thin after the last few weeks. South Africa was amazing and all-engrossing, and took me away from my email and the site for quite a while. And even though we got back on Monday (at least, I think it was Monday. Who knows, really), I’m still not quite over my jet-lag. Last night, I slept for 10 whole hours, starting at 9pm.

So now that I finally feel somewhat awake, I realize that I have loads to do. Loads of email. Loads of household chores. Loads of laundry (that one works on two levels!)

I’m off to tend to all those things I neglected while chasing after zebras. While I do that, you enjoy these links.

Whoa. By juxtaposing different images of faces together, we can make them appear distorted and grotesque. Check out what it does to celebrities’ faces, and shudder at the thought of how we mere mortals would look.

—————

This one just hurts my brain: Flight attendants question a man because they think his t-shirt alludes to a potential terrorist threat. Because … it features a quote from The Princess Bride.

—————

My friend Philip put it best: In my most private dreams, I am invited to this party. #starwars

—————

This map of the U.S. High Speed Rail System is a total pipe dream. But it doesn’t have to be.

—————

In absolute spite of myself, I just snorted my way through this list of the 32 Greatest Things to Have Ever Happened on Tumblr.

—————

It’s … it’s … IT’S A PAN-SIZE COOKIE COOKED IN A CAST IRON SKILLET. (Promptly faints.)

—————

This video, of a driver attempting a U-turn on a narrow street in Naples, will make you cringe, and giggle, and cheer. So, basically, it’s just like driving in Italy.

—————

Expedia’s new print campaign is brilliant – it features those three-letter airport codes configured into fun, travel-related messages.

—————

A Pixar animator did sketches of the 2012 NFL season. They are unspeakably fantabulous.

—————

This Kodak test footage from 1922 is some of the earliest color video ever recorded. It’s positively haunting and delightful and at times – like when a red-lipped blond pouts for the camera – feels surprisingly modern.

—————

My friends Carlos and Rose are embarking on a country-wide journey to learn more about love. Personally, I can’t think of a better reason to travel, ever.

—————

Alright, folks – I’ll be back next week, wide awake, and with loads to share. See you then!
