The Week: 11/11/11

It’s a grey Friday here in Seattle, and while I should be rather bummed about it, there’s too much to celebrate to let a few clouds get me down. Let’s talk about the week that was.

—————-

Today is Veteran’s Day. Take some time to read up about the history of this holiday, and if you have the chance, why not hug/make-out with a Veteran? It’s basically your duty as an American to thank those young, muscular folks who’ve chosen to serve.

—————-

Today is also Nigel Tufnel Day, which means that, for the first time in a century, the date goes all the way to 11. Celebrate by reading NPR’s analysis of Spinal Tap’s 11 greatest songs. And for your viewing pleasure, my absolute favorite song from Nigel and the crew.

For those of you less inclined to listen the Satanic verses that are in every good rock and roll song, you might be interested to learn the Vatican Gardens are now open to the public. Please refrain from having a mosh pit on the lawn. (via @kathika)

If – like me – you can’t get enough of British accents (seriously, HOW DO PEOPLE LIVE IN LONDON WITHOUT BEING CONSTANTLY SEDUCED) you might want to check out 7 Great British TV Show You Can Watch Online Now (catchy title, that one).  (via the always lovely @anglotopia)

Have you guys realized yet that I am huge nerd? In case it’s not evident, here’s another link to support that fact: minimalist superhero posters. I want, like, ELEVEN OF THEM.

—————-

Travel blogger (and all-around good guy) Mike Sowden sent me this (via his pal @ReineOG): what really happened at Stonehege.

—————-

Turns out that most blue-eyed people are probably mutants. Or, at the very least, they descended from a mutant. Which sounds cool and all, but call me when you get an adamantium skeleton.

—————-

A gift for my vegan (or severely allergic to dairy and egg) friends – the NY Times asks the important question, “Can you bake a vegan pie?” And apparently, yes, you can. I’ll have mine with a scoop of ice cream and a side of bacon, please.

Guess what arrived last week and is now hanging in my living room? My original watercolor of Jeff Goldblum’s head with a fly body. YEAH. It’s pretty much the greatest thing I’ve ever owned, not counting my husband (who I totally own. It’s in, like, the bible).

—————-

Brian Eno, Michael Stipe, and Stephen Colbert sing “Lean on Me.” Watching it will pretty much make you orgasm, like, 11 million times.

—————-

And a bonus 11th link, in honor of today: The Beard Slap.

—————-

Happy weekend, everyone! See you Monday.
