The Week: Sept. 2, 2011

I am absolutely exhausted. And the reason why is so ridiculous: my husband’s been out of town for two consecutive nights, and I can’t sleep a wink without him. I know. It’s absurd. I’m a grown woman. I should be able to get a restful night’s sleep without Rand, right? But unless I have him next to me, I stare at the ceiling when I should be dreaming. Fortunately, he’s coming home today.  So while I (yawn) get ready for him to come home (yawn), please enjoy these links. They absolutely will not put you to sleep. (Psst! How many times did you yawn when you read that last paragraph?)

Dolly Parton and Mick Jagger? River Phoenix, K.D. Lang, and Liza Minnelli? The blog Awesome People Hanging Out Together is full of unexpected pairings of fabulous folks.

Warning: the following video is not suitable for work (or children for that matter). But if you grew up in the 90s, be sure to check out Don Cheadle as Captain Planet (once it’s safe to do so).

Need something a little more Earth-friendly? Check out this flash mob react when someone recycles a plastic bottle.

The destruction that Hurricane Irene wreaked upon the northeast is heart-breaking.  Lives and homes were lost. As was a good deal of history, when numerous covered bridges were destroyed (via The New York Times).

—————

The artist behind Savage Chickens draws clever comics on Post-It notes. And yes, most of them include chickens.

Forgive me for my shameless self-promotion, but The Everywhereist was nominated for CBS Seattle’s Most Valuable Blogger Awards! Of course, I’m super behind in the voting … so … um … maybe you could vote for me? I mean, if you felt like it ? (Looks around awkwardly.)

—————

I’m not gonna lie – this next one is mostly for Rand. Because in our house, we quote this scene from 30 Rock about once a week.

—————

Soothing, ethereal, and occasionally reminiscent of Mark Rothko‘s work, Eric Cahan’s photos of the sky in different parts of the world are not to be missed.

—————

Can you tell when someone is sincerely smiling, and when they’re faking it? Take this test from the BBC, and see if you can spot the fakers. I got 19 out of 20 right (and I only changed the one I got wrong after rethinking it.) You’d think I’d have been better at guessing when my high school boyfriends we about to dump me.

—————

Apparently the new Superman not only has a revamped costume that doesn’t include red underpants, but he lacks a spit curl as well. I’m … I’m not sure how I feel about this. (Actually, I know exactly how I feel. I miss this guy more than ever.)

—————

Ewww … this is absolutely gnarly, but still fascinating: Slate explores how long you should wait before you cut off a trapped limb (don’t read eat if you’ve just eaten lunch. Or if you get queasy easily.)

—————

That’s it for me this week, folks! Next week I’ll have more to share from my trip to Wichita (Spoiler: there will be SEVERAL maple-bacon desserts. YEAH. The cupcake was only the beginning.) See you then!
