Failed attempts at looking cool: The Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy

I was looking through my photos of Rome from my trip last spring, and I realized something: it is impossible to look cool while tossing coins into the Trevi Fountain. Behold:

Let’s take a closer look, shall we?

This is not flattering.

Oh, dear. That’s close-enough, I think. No need to zoom any further to understand my point …

Hey, what are you doing? I said there was no need to zoom in any –

Damn it.

Sigh. It’s like I said – no one can look good while tossing coins into that fountain (especially not me).

But tradition says you absolutely have to do it. You toss a coin with your right hand over your left shoulder, and supposedly this guarantees that you’ll return to eternal city again. Personally, I think it’s all a big ruse to make the tourists look like morons. It works perfectly, too. Even my husband, who has this annoying tendency to look absurdly suave ALL THE DAMN TIME, looks a little goofy.

I mean, relatively speaking.

On the plus side, while you can’t avoid looking like a goober as you hurl your last Euro into the fountain, it’s very, very easy to look cool anywhere else in Rome (I’m convinced this is part of why the Italians always look so fabulous: setting). Check this out:

And this:

Sigh.

And this, too:

In fact, I daresay that not a single terrible photo of me was taken in Rome outside of the ones snapped in front of that damn fountain. In every other single picture I look composed and classy and …

Sigh. Okay, fine. Maybe the Trevi fountain isn’t actually to blame here. Perhaps I’m just a goober who really can’t take a good photo to save her life. And I’m definitely not cool enough to go running around Italy with Rand. But can I still go back to Rome? Please?

I mean, I did toss a coin into the fountain, after all.

My family is from the south, so we would call this pizza bianca ("white pizza) - and nobody really made it at home. But I became obsessed with it when we went to Genoa, and Rand and I seek out whenever we're in Liguria. We may have canceled our Italy trip, but I'll be damned if I'm not eating all the carbs. #saminnosrat #focaccia #saltacidfatheat
