The Week: March 4, 2011

I’ve been home for the last few weeks – okay, fine – just for the last week, but still – it’s been fantastic. I’ve been doing all those wonderful things that I never get a chance to do while on the road: cleaning out my closet, and my fridge, and dusting crevices between furniture that never see the light of day (and probably don’t need to be dusted, but whatever. It makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something). Time at home has also given me the opportunity to rot my brain while catching up on American Idol (as the kids would say, ZOMG. I am in love with this Paul McDonald fellow). So in the spirit of all things pop-culture, here are the links for The Week. May your brain not rot.

40 pieces of wisdom from popular movies. Not surprisingly, most of it comes from Yoda and Obi-Wan.

——————

The 100 best first lines from novels. #50 might just be my favorite.

——————

“Put your pants back on.” I probably shouldn’t have laughed so maniacally at this video interview of Harry Potter. I mean Daniel Radcliffe. I mean Harry Potter.

——————

Loving the “Looking into the Past” Flickr group, in which photographers combine photos of a location from two different eras (this one really got me).

And if you dig that, then check out the  artwork of Ben Heine, in which he combines pencil drawings with photography. It’s delightfully low-tech and brilliant.

Sometimes even superheroes gotta dance. And dance. And dance some more (via Philip, of A Lifetime of Worry fame.)

——————

I … I don’t even know how to describe this. In the words of the creator, it’s dancing typography. In my own words? So. Damn. Cool.

——————

A tale of love and divorce from Denise Grollmus, who was once married to Patrick Carney of the Black Keys. It’s heart-breaking, but I couldn’t stop reading it.

——————

Wow. Usually when I describe something as equal parts f#cked up and adorable, I’m talking about myself.

——————

I really hope the artist behind Stolen Lyric hasn’t abandoned their project. Because the combination of lines from popular songs with Polaroid-inspired snapshots? Pure brilliance.

——————

Illustrator Matthew Lyons is only 22 years old – but his artwork looks like it pre-dates him, as though it was torn off the cover of 1960s sci-fi book.

——————

10 words/phrases that you won’t learn in Spanish class. I don’t know that you should use them unless you either a really fast runner, or you know how to scream “I’m a hemophiliac” en espanol (in order to weasel out of  a fist-fight).

——————

Oh, god. I can’t stop laughing. And not just because I know some really good wedding photographers.

——————

And that’s it for me this week, folks. I’m off to go catch up on 30 Rock.
