The Week In Travel: March 25, 2010

This weeks brings lots of BLAH BLAH BLAH HOLY CRAP HEALTH CARE PASSED.

And if this is your first time realizing that I’m bleeding-heart commie liberal, well … then the obvious tends to elude you, and I’m not exactly sure how to help.

In other news that makes me smile …

Here’s a video of Bill Murray bartending at SXSW. He pours everyone tequila, regardless of their order (endure the hippie kid recounting the story until you see Bill). Mother pus-bucket, I love that man.

What’s that you say? You want ANOTHER awesome video to watch while you pretend to be working? Check out the video of this young lady, balancing books on her head while solving a Rubix cube and reciting pi to the 100th decimal, and pray she doesn’t apply for the job you currently aren’t doing.

And while I’ve seen London, I can’t say the same for Paris (nor for the Queen in her underpants). Thankfully, this video provides a beautiful panorama (of Paris. Not the queen).

Oh, and did you realize that Magnolia Bakery opened up a shop on W. 49th? Just four short blocks away from the Hilton at which we are now staying. I certainly didn’t realize it when I dragged an amazing and wonderful (and pregnant) friend of mine TO THE EFFING WEST VILLAGE TO GET A CUPCAKE. And did I mention we got lost? Like, twice.

I kept apologizing profusely.

“Why?” she asked. “I got to see the city. And I got cupcakes.”

Well, damn. That logic is hard to argue with. But I still feel incredibly guilty. If you’re reading this, dear friend who I’ve chosen not to mention by name because I don’t know if everyone knows you are preggers, know that I feel awful, and love you madly.

And I will buy you and your baby-to-be as many cupcakes as you both desire.

That’s it for this week. Stay tuned to the blog, because I’ve got stories about congressional medal of honor recipients, secret underground restaurants, and naked ladies.

  • It is the apex of privilege that I can walk around my neighborhood, face covered, and know that no one will think twice about it. Trying to be more aware of that privilege, and how I can use it for good. But even talking about it feels self-congratulatory. #irunwithmaud

  • Would I go so far as to call myself a baking genius? Yes. Yes, I would. 😅

My family is from the south, so we would call this pizza bianca ("white pizza) - and nobody really made it at home. But I became obsessed with it when we went to Genoa, and Rand and I seek out whenever we're in Liguria. We may have canceled our Italy trip, but I'll be damned if I'm not eating all the carbs. #saminnosrat #focaccia #saltacidfatheat
